With martial arts training, shouldn’t one through understanding of motion principles, be enabled to use anything one can hold in one’s hands, such as a pen or even a mobile phone for self defence needs? These instruments/tools should be used to defend oneself from an attacker as they are solid objects enabling one to strike with, as a force multiplier.
Yes, a person can be taught techniques using only their bare hands in defence, against those with a weapon. But isn’t or shouldn’t this be considered a last resort? The odds are mightily stacked against you, if an attacker is armed and you are not.
Why are the odds stacked against you?
Most techniques as taught by barehanded schools, are to wait and block an attack, then control an already attacking weapon or control a weapon holding hand. The barehanded fighter is almost never taught to initiate a barehanded attack against a weapon wielder. This leaves a barehanded defender from the get go on the back foot. This logically shows a person that a weapon wielder automatically has an advantage. Why leave a defender waiting for an aggressor to kill You? What about the old fashioned advice of “Run Away!” when attacked. What however, if no avenue is available to escape or there are several surrounding attackers or you have a family to protect?
There are predators in society that do not believe in this civilised non-weaponed cultural norm. They commit crimes and use weapons to attack you, without hesitation. How do we defend ourselves against them?
